Summary: Definitively a ‘dab free’ day; technically easy with only one long climb to sort the men from the boys (or the women from the girls!). Length: 30-40 kms, Total descent: 740m (ends at sea level.)
We start today straight from our accommodation on a trail that clings to the slopes of mount Batu Karu, winding its way around the tops of rice paddies and bamboo groves on a series of small broken tarmac roads, interspersed with jeep tracks. The first 5 km is mainly down hill punctuated with sharp but short up hill sections. This is followed by 5 km of steady uphill on a small tarmac road which gets us to just over 700 meters, where we turn on to a small red mud jeep track that leads us around the top of a large valley and to the highest point of the ride.
It is all plain sailing for the next 20 km’s as we head to the coast on a series of small roads and tracks. After a relaxed lunch we keep heading coast-wards past Kerambitan Palace, which is famous for its traditional dancers and musicians and is still lived in by the 9th King of the Tabanan Regency. After encountering a short but cheeky concrete uphill single track section we arrive at our Hotel, adjacent to the beach with great views of the famous south coast surf. Length: 40 km’s.
