Summary: Length 27-40 km Max height 1700 m Min height sea level. Superb single track, great views and a technical downhill section - it doesn't get much better than this!
Today starts with an optional hike up Mt Batur which rises around 700 m from the caldera floor. You start walking at 4.00 am from the Hotel and will be at the top by sunrise. It is a spectacular sight and well worth the effort. You can be back down by 8 am and ready for a ride! Today’s ride is a classic. It starts at the highest point on the outer crater at 1700 m where we start the first part of the trail on broken tarmac road through cool pine forests. The road changes to jeep track and ultimately singletrack that takes us along the ridge top with superb views of the crater, and on a clear day down to the east coast.
As we turn away from the ridge, we head around a steep sided valley and out onto the flanks of the volcano towards the east coast. You will notice a dramatic change from the relatively lush caldera to an arid and parched landscape and a harder and poorer way of life for the local people. We descend 1200 metres in 12 km’s which makes for some exciting riding on a mixture of dust, rock and hard pack trails. The track gradually becomes more forgiving until a couple of km’s from the sea where it turns into tarmac. At the coast you can either choose to put your bike on the trailer or take a spin along the coast road to your Hotel in the picturesque village of Amed.
