Summary: Definitively a ‘dab free’ day; technically easy with only one long climb to sort the men from the boys (or the women from the girls!). Length: 40 kms, Total descent: 740m (ends at sea level.)
The first part of the trail clings to the slopes of mount Batu Karu winding its way around the tops of rice paddies and bamboo groves on a series of small broken tarmac roads, interspersed with jeep tracks. The first 5 km is mainly down hill punctuated with sharp but short up hill sections and overall drops from a height of 650 to 450 meters. The next 5 km is a steady uphill on a small tarmac road which gets us to just over 700 meters, where we turn on to a small red mud jeep track that leads us around the top of a large valley and to the highest point of the ride.
It is all plain sailing for the next 15 km as we head to the coast on a series of small roads and tracks through lush rice paddies, coffee plantations and bamboo groves.
After a relaxed lunch we head to the coast mainly on small tarmac roads interrupted with a short but cheeky concrete uphill single track section.
