Karangasem and the slopes of Mount Agung

This area has the lowest trails, with a couple of trail heads starting at around 400 m, but don’t worry there is usually a cool breeze and a lot of the tracks are in the shade. As this area also has a number of water palaces there are bathing opportunities to be had if it gets too hot.

The lower slopes of mount Agung are dominated by Salak (or snake fruit) plantations and coconut groves which afford plenty of small shady mud trails some with interesting drops and rocky sections to put you to the test. Lower down, the ridges are often steep sided with single track paths along the ridge, offering fantastic views across to the coast and beyond to the island of Nusa Penida.

All trails in this section end at the sea, with some finishing at exquisite remote sandy beaches where a cold beer awaits and it doesn’t get much better than that!
